First of all, we need to figure out what we mean by understanding? The fact that the robot is following the instructions that the person originally put into it? Or the fact that he receives instructions from us in real time, as if we are talking to him, and he is answering?

In the first case, everything is relatively simple. The robot's program contains an algorithm, i.e. sequencing. Each action is short enough. Those. even the most difficult action is divided into simple steps. And they repeat themselves and follow a strict program. If event A has occurred - do action A, if B - C. This is how automatic systems behave, for example, in factories. And even if we control the robot in real time, we simply give it commands, which are, in fact, the same steps of the algorithm. They are already registered in the internal "dictionary" of the robot, in its program.

But you are probably interested in another situation - how can a person communicate with a robot in the same way as with another person? So that he could say: “Help me with my homework, please,” and the suave robo-nanny would use all the powerful artificial intelligence to get you an A. And with this, everything is much more complicated.

The fact is that, first of all, when communicating, you need to be able to navigate in context. Watch how you talk to your parents, to your friends. And you will notice that often we understand each other "perfectly". We can say: "It was cool on Friday!" And everyone will understand which Friday, where and what happened, and what is "cool". Such tasks are still difficult for modern artificial intelligence. Which Friday? What exactly do you mean from what happened? And "cool" is how? Is it about fun and excitement, or about how eggs are boiled? Or maybe about the angle of the inclined surface? Understanding the context is the main difficulty for communication between a human and a machine. First, we have a more complex memory. We know how to draw accurate conclusions from incomplete information. And we have learned to communicate for thousands of years. Studied!

One of the main components of communication is the ability to learn. And learn constantly. And today, scientists have taught computer programs to learn. This approach is called learning neural networks. This topic is very popular today.

Full communication between humans and robots will become possible when humans create real artificial intelligence. Then there will be devices like the R2-D2 and C3PO from Star Wars. That's just a big question, and if they have full intelligence, can they be treated like robots? How about tools?

P.S. By the way, one of the sweetest and most understanding robots in culture is the artificial intelligence butler Jarvis from the Iron Man films. Recently, Mark Zuckerberg, the author and head of Facebook, tried to create his own Jarvis. And gladly told about it.

But, nevertheless, there are problems - context. Therefore, Mark's wife recorded Jarvis's "mistakes" in the second video.

Oh ... Depends on the robot! Most often, communication goes through the program code, but there are also more complex ones, in which a speech recognizer is built in (like Siri and Ok Google) and they should already have a program that analyzes human speech, looks for keywords in it, to which, in in turn, certain actions or words are attached. There may also be a camera that will read movements (like the kinect from the Xbox) and again by analogy. Sees movement, which he knows, reacts to it in accordance with the program code. : з
