The United States and Russia are afraid of more than single launches, and a massive strike with the use of intercontinental ballistic missiles ( ICBM).
In Russia, information about a missile attack is formed by the Missile Attack Early Warning System (EWS) upon receipt of signals from space echelon (satellites) and from over-the-horizon radars . Space data must be confirmed by radar data. It is necessary that at least one radar station also detect the target and accompany it for some time. In addition, the technical data arriving at the command post of the early warning system is also analyzed by the duty shift. The operational control officer on duty makes the final decision on the reliability of the information received.
The early warning system provides for the generation of signals of 2 types: "missile launch" , i.e. a single ICBM launch, and "missile attack" - more than one missile launch. The “missile launch” signal is not enough for its subsequent transmission to the combat command and control system of the strategic nuclear forces (to the president, the minister of defense, the chief of staff and command).
The “missile attack” signal records a mass launch of ICBMs along the infrared trail rocket engines. Therefore, the absence of a massive missile launch already speaks of the loneliness of the object that has appeared.
A similar system exists in the United States.
The first missile defense system in the United States, in general, on its first watch took the rising moon for an enemy object. Nowadays, everything is monitored by a complex air defense system, incl. satellite tracking, which analyzes the situation based on many parameters. So, the system will be able to distinguish a rocket from a meteorite.
