Probably very far away. It is easier to advertise about the capabilities of a particular mobile communication service, Internet speed and say that we are the best company on the market in Russia than to invest in development. Expensive, technically and financially. All the equipment is imported, and this already says a lot. In Russia, 3g does not work everywhere, but you are talking about 4g and 5g. In China, 5 + g is being developed further, and the state and business are actively investing in this. So we draw conclusions .....

Both 4G and 5G are no longer fiction, but an accomplished reality that has existed since 2010. The peak speed of 5G connections reaches 20 Gbps, which is unrealistically fast, even hard to imagine. With such a connection, even traffic lights and road signs can be connected to the Internet, not to mention various medical sensors, conveyors, machine tools and other equipment. Thanks to 5G, unmanned vehicles will become a reality, and such a network will allow them to communicate with each other, interact, which will significantly reduce the risk of accidents. The only question is how to implement all this, there is a lot of work here, and the frequency bands for mobile communications are already overloaded today.

One of the tangible benefits of 5G, besides speed, is the increased capacity for IoT proliferation - an increase in the number of devices that can be connected to a single base station.

Another important property for 5G is " slicing ", the ability to isolate and protect layers with different virtual networks from one another. Why is this so important? As mentioned above, 5G technology implies not only mobile communications and Internet access, but also the operation of the Internet of things, connection to a data network to increase the security of autonomous systems (for example, autopilots of cars and drones), banking and industrial Internet.

It is important to understand that 5G will integrate existing technologies - LTE and Wi- Fi instead of competing with them. In order to bring the future closer and begin to roll out 5G networks everywhere in Russia, it is necessary to carry out a number of important preparatory work, to seriously improve the infrastructure.

Today, the need for fifth generation networks among Russians is not as acute as among Europeans or, for example , from Singaporeans with their unmanned taxis. So far, the level of development of IoT in Russia is not so high as to urgently need to spread the Internet of the fifth generation: we use much fewer sensors that need access to the Internet, and, as a rule, the use of the wireless Internet in our country is limited to accessing the Internet from mobile devices.

Russians are attracted by the high speed of 5G, but speed is still not the whole essence of the fifth generation Internet. While the situation is changing and IoT is becoming more widespread in Russia, a relatively long time may pass. And again, we may not have time to "jump on the train" 5G - it may be replaced by another technology, which will already be introduced in Russia based on the updated infrastructure.

How 5G will affect the market mobile communications in Russia and the world?

Comments by Alexander Timoshenko , Ph.D., Associate Professor of the Department of Telecommunication Systems, NRU MIET.

"To answer this question, you have to mentally go back ten years when the world first learned about the LTE standard. Many companies said that this is a 4th generation standard. In fact, a standard that meets the requirements communication systems of the 4th generation, came out a little later, in 2011, is LTE Advanced. Now there are 2 5G standards: autonomous and non-autonomous. In fact, the first smartphones and the first base stations will satisfy the non-autonomous 5G standard, the main purpose of which is to provide high-speed data transmission channel and low latency when accessing network resources - this is LTE Advanced Pr o. The autonomous 5G standard opens up the possibility of working with a large number of IoT devices. Considering the optimistic outlook, the mobile market will gradually be filled with devices that support the non-autonomous 5G standard. In a few years, devices, including IoT, will appear that support the 5G standard. The pessimistic scenario assumes that users will not want to waste resources, primarily battery power, on the illusory possibility of increasing speed. Operators will have to find tricks to get their investment back. Ultimately, only IoT equipment can have an impact on users, but it should not be forgotten that IoT systems that are developing now support existing networks, for example LoRa, NB-IoT, NB-Fi and even Wi-Fi.
