There are two options:
1) Nothing. If you have not read "philosophical books", then you can hardly maintain a discussion with the person who read them. I must admit that this person is most likely smarter than you in some matters. There is nothing to worry about.

2) Discuss. But for this you also have to read at least a couple of books :) And even better - read more than this person. Then you will most likely be able to put this asshole in his place. Read it!
